Howard Mining Services Equipment designs and manufactures specialised material handling equipment for mining and industrial applications.

HMSE has been hard at it for 5 years developing a range of innovative materials handling equipment, starting with its patented and award winning mini-loader (2015) for use cleaning around mine and bulk commodity conveyor belts and other hard to access areas safely without interrupting production processes. The development of the mini-loader and the quality of design and precision engineering it embodies showcased HMSE’s capabilities to the local market and a growing stable of international clients. The mini-loader can be visited online at

Business model development

With Triple Innovation’s assistance, HMS received a grant from the Commonwealth Accelerating Commercialisation program in 2015 and a Regional Solutions Grant from NSW JobsforNSW program to commercialise the min-loader to local and offshore markets. Recognising HMS expertise in design and innovation and the remote control capabilities of the mini-loader,  in 2015 HMS secured the national distributorship for Hetronics Australasia (Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific) a Methode Electronics company.  Hetronics specialises in the custom design and manufacture of industrial Radio Remote Control (RRC) systems.  This allowed HMSE to go after contracts to convert manually operated materials handling equipment to remote control or duel manual/remote control to enhance operator safety.  HMS secured a range of contracts with global equipment manufacturers to develop conversion kits and licence the technology.

With a growing reputation, in 2018 HMS acquired the small 3Arm Australia distributorship and has since completed the design and manufacture of the OTRACO 3arm in collaboration with the Downer Group. Adding a mechatronics capability has allowed HMSE to set the foundations to integrate design and manufacture focusing on specialised materials handling equipment with fast turnaround times and high quality outcomes whilst maintaining its manufacturing and skills base in Newcastle, NSW..  It has also set the foundations to develop or convert fossil fuel powered hydraulic equipment to low emissions battery operated electric equipment and meet the growing client demand for low/no emissions technologies.

Triple Innovation value add

Triple Innovation has worked with HMS to secure on-going access to the R&D tax incentive, commercialisation grants ($700,000) and export grants ($60,000).  While cash is always important, strategic advice to develop practical strategies to grow business value and make investment in R&D efficient and effective binds these assignments together.  Cash is not useful unless you know how to invest it to grow business value both to provide income and to monetise that value to a willing buyer in the longer term.  HMSE is on this journey.
